Leeches

What's your opinion of leech therapy? Is it practised in hospitals or clinics in your neighbourhoods? Do you think it is an appropriate form of medical treatment?

  1. In my opinion I think that leech therapy is quite useful for the treatment of plastic or reconstructive surgery because these therapies require blood to be nourished regularly so that the tissues attach to each other as well. However, from the information that says that the dangers of treatment are quite high, this method should be used carefully. In the leech therapy, I never knew whether in my country or neighboring countries were treated in these ways. As part of my experience, it has been found that the use of fly larvae in the treatment of wound infection, which worm acts to eat dead tissue in the wound, resulting in new tissue growth and wound healing faster. It is commonly used with pressure ulcers that are infected in paraplegic patients. The result of the treatment is quite good.

    1. Interesting post! Interesting that maggots have been used to aid in wound healing. It makes sense that we utilise the propensities of some of our fellow organisms to aid us, doesn't us ... but at the same time people, no doubt, tend to be repulsed by maggots. :-)

    8. It is surprising that maggots is use for wound caring. In my opinion, I think that this method will be the alternative treatment for patients who have contaminated wound and it maybe useful if the doctor use this choice to combine with other medical treatment such as antibiotics, debridement, sterile wound dressing and nutrition that help for wound developing. Furthermore, the doctor who use this technique should be careful about aseptic technique.

  2. I have not heard about leeches therapy before. I quite interested but disgusted also when I imagine similarity with some patients. However, according to Wiwanatkit (2012),who is a medical professor at Chulalongkorn University,Thailand ,he reported that it can be used effectively for the management of various disorder especially skin and musculoskeletal disorders and also Sig and colleagues (2017) indicated that it has had widest therapeutic usage among the leeches because they have many kinds of substance such as analgesic,anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulatant. The technique for leech treatment is cheap, effective and easy to apply. Consequently, I think it can be used for the treatment but it should be used the proper type of leeches in each treatment, controlled the quality of the procedure, closed monitoring for bleeding or coagulating.

    7. According to your post made me feel that the information about medical treatment is very important because the health professionals who may use it should find some data to support their decision making especially, current research data which show that this method is useful and has low complication.

    8. I still feel disgusted eventhough I know that leech therapy can be very beneficial for patients suffering with venous congession. It would be better if sciencists can extract analgesic, anti-imflammatory and anti-coagulant substances from them in order to use these substances in patients safely.

    9. yeah, I'm just worried about the quality control. Because most Thai people are usually unaware of safety and sometimes they use hazardous treatments without the health professionals.

  3. In my experience,i have know about this article past many years ago from aboard for cure the patient who was Congestive Heart Failure to release volume pumping with heart exemple,Leech therapy sounds thoroughly medieval — however, it predates the medieval era by a substantial chunk of time.
Ancient Egyptians, Indians, Arabs, and Greeks all used leeches therapeutically.
Skin diseases, dental problems, nervous system issues, inflammation, and more were all given the leech treatment(Medical News Today,2018) but in Thailand is not popular and many people were afraid of leeches they do not want to receive from leeches therapy.

  5. In Thailand, leech therapy is alternative treatment not popular. I know in some hospital have leech therapy. On the other hand, leech therapy must be approved by the patient and must be well supervised by an expert. In the Mahasarakham University near my collage, had worm therapy in patients with rot such as diabetes mellitus (DM) wounds. However, not popular with worms treatment. As the result, I my opinion, good way for everyone because like a new choice, new alternative therapy or nature therapy. If you asked me "Do you want leeches therapy?" My answer is no thanks because i'm afraid of leechใ >*<

  6. In my opinion, leeches therapy is an alternative treatment that the doctor can use with carefulness. I have ever read that long time ago leeches were used for helping someone who had more blood in their part of body especially in their wound with abscess. Moreover, it can be use to treat musculoskeletal pain and venous thrombosis. Although,I used to heard that leeches were used in medical treatment, I have no experiences to see the doctor use it in hospital. I think that though, it has more advantages,it also have adverse effects for the patient such as blood loss and infection. Therefore, the doctor who decides to use leeches have to train how to use it and get more information about it.

  7. Personally, I think leeches are too disgusting to work with so if there is other way to cure patients I will suggest the other one. However, I cannot deny leeches' benefits that are mentioned in this article about helping suck excessive blood from re-attached parts of patients' bodies. As far as I know, using leeches for medical purposes have been studied for several years in many Medical Faculties but I'm not sure when it comes to the real practices if any doctors use them this way or not. Of course, it might be beneficial for both patients and doctors if leech therapy works but sometimes we need to research more about all advantages and consequences from this method.

  10. From my point of view, it is very interesting that leech can be used as a medical treatment. In Thailand, there are several alternative medicines such as meditation, acupuncture and Thai massage. Moreover, there are folk remedies, for instance, holy water and spirit houses. So, there is no doubt that leeches can be one of the treatment choices in Thailand.
From the article in the booklet I read, I found that the leeches had been used for along time and it contributed good results although it bring about some side effects. I think it is appropriate to use it and support this method to be implemented in the hispital but it must be restricted and conducted only by physicians or well-trained therapists. In addition, safety data of the Leeches therapy are supposed to be collected and published as research which might help healthcare providers feel confident to use it in their patients.
